Cultural Appropriation

A quick search on the ASOS official website did not fetch us anything like this but per the above screenshot which was posted on facebook, ASOS is doing some serious business on the back of cultural appropriation—selling ethnic beaded waist chain for £65.

And if you do not get what we are talking about, we are referring to the ordinary waist beads African women wear, called ‘Torma’ in twi.

Buying this in Ghana or most parts of Africa should not cost anything above £1 but it seems ASOS has taken the price to a different level with nothing more than a mere endorsement by the shop, or let’s put it this way; by the fact that white folks are now telling us this is cool.

Would you buy this ethnic beaded waist chain for £65—that’s if the photo is right?

And what’s your take on the increasing global cultural appropriation; mostly, white people jacking something black people already do and all of a sudden, lifting the price to unimaginable levels.
